Description

A block of four houses, built around 1828, presenting the appearance of a single larger residence. The design is attributed to John Nash, possibly in collaboration with J Thomson. The houses are constructed with stucco facades and brick rear elevations, topped with a slated mansard roof incorporating dormers.

The symmetrical design is oriented towards Regent's Park, although the main entrances are located on the rear elevation facing Cumberland Place. The building comprises four storeys, attics, and basements, with a seven-window frontage. The side returns feature three windows each, and there are projecting semicircular bays that rise to the main cornice line. A prominent feature is the central, projecting tetrastyle portico with Corinthian columns, rising through the first and second floors, and a ground floor that functions as a podium. Corinthian pilasters adorn the remaining bays, paired at the projecting bays, and support the main entablature, topped by a projecting cornice at the third-floor level. The main elevation incorporates recessed sash windows on the ground, second, and third floors. The first floor features casement windows and cast-iron balconies. A cornice and blocking course are found above the third floor.

The rear elevation has projecting end bays, mostly blind, with three windows each. The entrances are recessed within projecting stucco porticoes, featuring pilasters that support an entablature and blocking course; these are topped by fanlights and panelled doors. Nos. 2 and 3 have attached cast-iron railings to the areas and flanking the steps leading to the entrances.

The interiors remain uninspected.

Attached to the property are stone balustrades and plain wrought-iron, geometrically patterned railings, set upon a low wall enclosing the garden forecourt. These railings represent a subsidiary feature of historical interest.
