Description

Christ Church is a church constructed in 1836, designed by Sir James Pennethorne. Subsequent alterations were carried out by RC Carpenter between 1839 and 1843, and by William Butterfield, with decoration, between 1849 and 1885. The building is of grey stock brick with stucco and stone dressings, built in a Neo-Grecian style. It has a rectangular plan.

The exterior features a main central entrance on the south facade, accessed via a shallow portico with pilasters supporting an entablature that continues around the building. There is a shallow pediment and roundels in the frieze depicting a dove, "IHS", and a triangle. The architraved, trapezoidal doorway has panelled doors and an overlight. The portico is flanked by round-arched windows, and the angles are marked by small square pavilions. Above the main entrance rises a three-stage brick tower; the middle stage has columns and a broken entablature, while the top stage features a thin steeple. A west facade presents five tall round-arched windows flanked by brick pilasters supporting an entablature. The corner pavilions contain architraved, trapezoidal doorways with console bracketed pediments and panelled doors. A single-storey east facade extension runs the length of the church. The north facade is cement rendered, with a projecting rectangular sanctuary featuring a 20th-century cross.

The interior is galleried and has a marble floor laid by Butterfield; the glass is by Clayton and Bell. A window depicting The Sermon on the Mount on the east side was designed by DG Rossetti in 1864. Numerous fittings have been relocated to St Mary Magdalene, Munster Square.
