Description
No. 1 Elm Row is a terraced house dating from around 1720. It is constructed of brown brick with red brick dressings and stands four storeys tall. The building features four windows, along with a two-window extension. Plain brick pilasters are located at the corners of the older block. The doorway is adorned with a carved bracketed hood and a half-glazed door. The windows have gauged red brick flat arches and dressings, with flush framed sashes that have exposed boxing. Notably, the west window on the second floor is bowed and includes a cast-iron balcony with a tented canopy. The parapet has been rebuilt, and the extension features a verandah with a tented roof supported by cast-iron columns. From this extension, a smaller door leads to a cobbled yard at the rear.
Although the interior has not been inspected, it is noted to retain original panelling and a staircase with turned balusters and column newels. Historically, this house was the home of the writer D.H. Lawrence in 1923.
