Description
57 and 58 Lincoln's Inn Fields is a house built around 1730 by Henry Joynes, with later additions and alterations. The building features a stone facade with a heavily rusticated ground floor and a slated mansard roof with dormers.
It stands three storeys tall, with an attic and basement, and has five windows. The central semicircular porch is supported by coupled Roman Doric columns and flanked by three-quarter engaged columns, an addition made in 1795, likely by Sir John Soane. The double entrances form a semi-circle and include fanlights and panelled doors. An iron balcony balustrade spans the first floor, and the windows are adorned with enriched architraves. The first floor features a pulvinated frieze and a pedimented cornice. Ionic pilasters are present between the windows and on the flanks of the building, accompanied by an enriched entablature with a pulvinated frieze and a modillion cornice. The building is topped with a balustraded parapet.
Inside, there is a plain stone staircase with square balusters. The entrance is flanked by stone balustrades, which also surround the areas. Historically, the house was originally built as a single dwelling but was divided into two by Sir John Soane and restored to one building around 1909.
