Description

Gray's Inn Square numbers 12, 13, and 14, along with the gatehouse and attached railings, were built between 1684 and 1688, with later restorations. The buildings are constructed of brown brick with red brick dressings and feature brick bands between the floors, topped with a tiled roof. They rise four storeys above cellars and have seven windows each, with the gatehouse having two windows and number 14 featuring two half windows. The stone doorcases have consoles and broken segmental pediments with a ball at the center. The windows have gauged red brick flat arches and dressings, with flush frames that include boxing and glazing bars. The eaves cornice is made of wood blocks and is bracketed.

Inside, the buildings retain some panelled rooms, each featuring a dog-leg stair with turned balusters and square newels.

The attached cast-iron railings with urn finials lead to the areas in front of the buildings. The gatehouse, located between numbers 13 and 14, is made of brown brick with a rusticated stone ground floor, rusticated stone quoins, and stone bands. It has a flat arch carriage entrance with a griffon carved on the keystone. The windows have stone architraves and flush frames with glazing bars, and there is an enriched modillion cornice with a pediment. The elevation facing Gray's Inn Road is similar, but the windows feature red gauged flat arches and dressings. Within the carriageway, there are windows and a doorway from a former 18th-century bookshop, complete with a frame for shutters and a panelled surround.
