Description
Barclays Bank is a house that originated in the early 18th century, was refronted in 1822, and converted into a bank in the 20th century with significant alterations. The building features a facade made of gault brick and has a slate roof with brick internal gable-end stacks.
The exterior consists of three stories with a five-window front, where the central bay projects forward. A central portico porch is supported by a pair of fluted Roman Doric columns that rise to a panelled architrave. The entrance includes a four-panelled door with an overlight featuring two concentric circles, set within a doorcase that has reeded pilasters and meander capitals. On either side of the door, there are two horned sash windows with 2/2 glazing bars and gauged skewback arches. The upper floors have five similar sash windows, with the attic storey windows being shorter. The building is topped with a dentil eaves cornice, and a plaque on the south gable wall indicates the date 1822.
Inside, there are no features from before 1980 remaining in the banking hall, and the original plan has been compromised.
