Description

96A and 96B are two houses located on Risbygate Street in Bury St Edmunds, dating from the early 17th century with later alterations. The buildings are timber-framed and rendered, featuring horizontal boarding on the north gable wall and a corrugated asbestos roof. A plain red brick chimney stack is situated at the south end.

The exterior consists of two storeys and attics, and may be part of a longer range. There are two windows on the front, which are 12-pane sashes in flush cased frames, with one boarded window. The ground storey has two boarded windows, while the two flat-headed dormers feature old 2-light single bar casement windows. There are two entrance doors, one leading to part of the ground storey only.

Inside, some main components of the timber frame are exposed. The bay at the south end has a chamfered ceiling beam on the ground storey and very long jowls on the main posts in the room above. The remaining two bays have a lower ceiling level on the ground storey, with any visible ceiling beams boxed, while wallplates and main posts remain exposed. An upper fireplace has a bolection-moulded surround, and the attics are plastered.

Attached to the south-west corner of the house is a wall from a former timber-framed building, which consists of two narrow bays with close studding and a middle rail above a high brick plinth. It is unclear if this framing was part of No. 96B Risbygate Street.
