Description
The granaries located to the north-west of Number 98 The Rising Sun Public House are the remains of a large complex dating from the 18th century. The structure features timber framing and is rendered on the upper storey, while the ground storey is constructed of random flint and red brick. The roofs are made of corrugated iron and include various roof-lights. The building is two storeys high and divided into two sections, with the south end being taller.
Inside, the south end consists of three bays and has very heavy chamfered main beams with run-off stops on the ground storey, while the joists are covered. The upper storey features tie-beams supported by long arched braces and shows considerable evidence of reused timbers. The roof has a ridge-piece. The lower north end is arranged in six bays, with heavy ceiling beams on the ground storey. The upper storey here also has tie-beams with arched braces, and the wall framing includes primary braces and bisected studs. The roof is less substantial, with a ridge-piece but no principal rafters, and clasped purlins.
