Description
John-o-Lidgate's House is a 16th-century timber-framed house featuring exposed timber-framing and plaster infill. The ground floor at the front is boarded. This site is locally connected to John of Lidgate, a monk, poet, and author from Bury St Edmunds, who was born in Lidgate around 1370; his brass memorial can be found in the Church of St Mary. The house has two storeys and attics. The north-west end is constructed of red brick and includes a gable with crow-stepped ornamentation and remnants of octagonal chimney stacks. The return front displays some moulded brick hexagonal panelling. Most windows are 20th-century casements, but there are several original windows featuring moulded mullions. The roof is pantiled and hipped at the south-east end, with one gabled dormer. Inside, the house boasts well-preserved exposed framing, moulded and carved beams, and a beautifully carved fireplace lintel with a central motif believed to represent the pomegranate of Katherine of Aragon.
John-o-Lidgate's House is part of a group that includes Lidgate Stores, Crispen Cottage, and adjoining premises, as well as a cottage to the north-west of Crispen Cottage and Lidgate Cottage.
