Description
The Great Barton War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921. It is located in the churchyard near the main entrance gate, to the north-east of the Church of the Holy Innocents, which is a Grade I-listed building.
The memorial is made of Portland stone and features a Greek cross on top of a tapering octagonal shaft with a moulded foot. This shaft rises from a small octagonal pedestal that sits on a wide octagonal plinth. The plinth has a flat stone cap with a moulded cornice underneath and rests on a moulded foot. The entire structure is set on a two-stepped, square base. All the lettering on the memorial is incised.
The main inscription is located on the north-east face of the plinth and reads: "ERECTED/ TO THE MEN OF/ THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918." The names of 22 parishioners who died in the First World War are inscribed on the other faces of the plinth, with the 23rd name appearing on the north-west face of the plinth foot.
