Description

The barn at Manor Farm is an aisled barn dating from the 13th century, with alterations from the 16th century and replacements and recladding from the 19th century. It is timber-framed, with the aisles rebuilt and faced in rubble flint. The main roof is thatched, while the aisles, which extend around the ends of the frame, are slated. The outer walls of the aisles are divided into bays by plain red brick pilasters. There are red brick diamond-shaped ventilation openings in all but the central bay, which contains the cart entrance.

Inside, despite significant remodeling, there are substantial remains of 13th-century work. At least eight main posts have two trenches for passing braces, although only one truss, located to the left of the entry, appears to be in its original position. Four tie-beams feature two pairs of notched-lap housings for the ends of the passing braces, which do not extend above tie-beam level. The arcade plates show stop-splayed scarfing joints that have buckled badly. The original main posts are rough and irregular in shape. The roof over the main span is original and has housings for a collar to each pair of rafters but was remodeled into a queen-post form in the 16th century. During this time, most of the trusses were relocated, and an end-aisle was added on the west, possibly replacing an original bay. There may have also been shortening at the east end, where the aisle is a 19th-century addition. Before the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the manor to which this barn was attached belonged to the Benedictine abbey of St. Edmundsbury.
