Description
31, 32, and 33 Angel Hill is a restaurant with flats above, originally three separate properties, each containing a shop and a house. It dates from the early to mid 19th century and is constructed of white brick with a slate roof. The rear of the building is built against and incorporates a section of the precinct wall of the former Abbey of St Edmund, which rises to the second storey and is made of roughly coursed flint.
The facade features a six-window range arranged in a 2:2:2 pattern, separated by raised plain pilasters. There is a plain stucco band between the second and third storeys. All windows are 12-pane sashes set in plain reveals with gauged heads and stone sills. The building has three shop fronts in a traditional style, with the center shop front featuring vertical glazing bars only, while the two outer fronts have widely spaced vertical and horizontal bars. Ornate console brackets adorn the ends of the fascia.
There are six doors spaced along the front, one of which is blocked, while three have sunk panels and heavy moulded surrounds. The significance of this group is highlighted by the incorporation of the Abbey precinct wall.
