Description
1 and 2 Church Cottages, also known as the Widows' Cottages, are a row of four almshouses built in 1856, now functioning as two separate cottages. They are single-storey structures made of random kidney flint with decorative white brick details. The roofs are covered in fishscale tiles, featuring ornamental cresting and high brick copings on the gables, topped with pinnacles at the apex. Each cottage has two internal chimney stacks, each with two rounded shafts that have different ornate designs. The cottages feature three-light casement windows, which still show remnants of decorative leading, set within rectangular surrounds of chamfered brick. There are two gabled porches, designed with copings and finials similar to the main roof, and each porch has pointed Gothic doorways. Inside each porch, there are two plank doors with ornamental wrought-iron hinges and applied pilaster strips, along with a wooden bench beside each door.
