Description
The Church of St Mary is a parish church dated 1856, located in Culford Park. It was rebuilt in the early English style by architect W.G. Habershon for the Rev. E.R. Benyon, who was both rector and lord of the manor. The tower of the earlier church was raised and encased in flint and Bath stone to match the rest of the structure. A north aisle was added in 1908.
The church features random kidney flint with Bath stone quions and dressings, along with plain tiled roofs. The nave has two-light windows with cusped plate-tracery, while the chancel has similar single-light windows. A prominent three-light window is located at the east end. The south porch has a steeply pitched plain tiled roof. The tower consists of four stages, with diagonal buttresses faced with panels of black knapped flint, an embattled parapet with flushwork panels, and heavy, ornate two-light windows at the top stage. There is also a vestry to the north of the chancel.
Inside, the church contains numerous monuments from the older church, including memorials to members of the Bacon family, notably a large standing wall monument to Jane Bacon from 1654, which includes her husband and children. There are also memorials to various Cornwallis family members, and in the north aisle, a large recumbent effigy of Countess Cadogan, who died in 1907, is displayed in white marble within a vaulted recess, accompanied by a cross, putti, and large vine-trails on the back wall. Beneath the church are vaults belonging to the Cornwallis and Cadogan families.
