Description

The Six Bells Public House is a 15th-century building that underwent alterations in the mid-19th century. It is 1 and a half storeys tall with attics and features a three-cell open hall design. The structure is timber-framed and clad in 19th-century red brick, which is now painted. It has a gambrel roof covered with glazed plain tiles arranged in bands that alternate with fish scale tiles. The roof includes gabled dormers that have plain tiles, bargeboards with undulating soffits, and spike finials, along with axial and gable chimneys made of red brick.

The mid-19th-century windows have segmental heads, and there are various sliding sashes and casements, along with a fully-glazed entrance door from the 20th century. Inside, the open hall has been significantly altered, featuring an arched doorway leading into the parlour on the right-hand side. Some close-studded walling is exposed in the bar area. A first-floor structure has been inserted into the hall, and a chimney intrudes into the former cross-passage, dating from the late 16th century. The original roof structure was replaced in the 18th or 19th century; it was originally half-hipped at the parlour end and likely over the service end as well. The building is included in the heritage listing despite its 19th-century alterations due to its significant early core.
