Description
This is a 15th-century barn located 60 metres south of Place Farmhouse in Hawstead. The barn features three bays and one aisle on the south side, constructed from timber framing and covered with weatherboarding. The roof is sheeted with asbestos. Inside, the barn has a crown-post roof with square crown posts that have spreading bases, arch braces reaching up to the collar purlin, and rising braces from the tie beam to the post head. The tie beam is slightly cambered and supported by massive arch braces. The aisle tie beams are jowled where they meet the arcade posts, and there is a reversed assembly at the eaves. Passing braces extend from the cill beam to the back of the arcade post head. The main doorway is located at the east end bay; it is likely that there were originally at least two additional bays at the east end until the 16th or 17th century. The roof was originally hipped at the west end but was converted to a gable in the 17th century, featuring short clasped purlins. There is a section of early rendering on the north wall, now within the adjoining barn, which displays a pargetted motif in high relief. The original framing members are notably large and of exceptional quality.
