Description
The Old Forge is a cottage, likely dating from the 17th century, possibly with later 18th-century alterations. It is timber-framed and rendered, with a pantile roof featuring gabled ends. A brick axial stack provides central heating to the main room. Originally, the left-hand room was heated by a gable end stack, now demolished, and the lower right-hand room remains unheated. A later outshut has been added to the rear of the right end.
The cottage is one storey high with an attic. The west front has an asymmetrical arrangement of three windows, all with 20th-century casements. A 20th-century central porch incorporates a large gabled dormer above it. Other 20th-century casements are found at the rear, a further outshut is located on the left side, and a gabled dormer is positioned to the left of the centre.
Inside, the timber framing is exposed. The rooms all feature chamfered axial beams and exposed, unchamfered joists. A beam in the central room intrudes into the left room, suggesting a previous movement of the partition wall and a reduction in size for the central room. The central room’s brick fireplace has a chamfered lintel with hollow step stops. Common rafters are exposed on the first floor.
Alternatively, the cottage is a timber-framed and plastered house, one storey high with attics. It has casement windows and a 20th-century boarded door. The roof is thatched and includes one gabled dormer. The Old Forge forms a group with The Nook (Nos 1 and 2) and the parson's cottage.
