Description
No. 42 and Timbers are two houses that were originally one building, dating from the late 16th century with alterations made in the 18th century and mid-20th century. The structure has one and a half storeys with attics and features a three-cell lobby-entrance plan. It is timber-framed and rendered, with the walling of No. 42 rebuilt in rendered masonry. The roof is covered with Roman pantiles and has gabled casement dormers, along with axial chimneys made of gault brick. The windows are 20th-century casements, and there are glazed entrance doors. Timbers has an axial chimney with a large open fireplace in the hall and exposed framing. The roof features a complete wind-braced clasped-purl construction of good quality. No. 42 was previously the service end of the house and was almost entirely rebuilt in the 18th century; the 20th-century extension to the left is not of special interest. The building is included in the register despite the 20th-century alterations due to the high-quality timber-framing, particularly at the roof level.
