Description
The walled garden, located 100 meters north of Tostock Place, dates from the early to mid 19th century and was built to serve Tostock Place. It is constructed of red brick in stretcher bond, entirely of half-brick thickness. The garden features a serpentine plan, known as crinkle-crankle walling, which is a rectangular shape measuring approximately 40 by 25 meters. The walls rise to about 2 meters in height. There are pedestrian gateways at the east ends of the north and south walls, with the south wall retaining a simple wrought iron gate. The crinkle-crankle design provides stability to the half-brick walling, allowing it to reach a greater height than would typically be possible, while also offering additional shelter for plants trained against it. This type of walling was only constructed in small numbers during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, primarily in Suffolk. The garden is currently in poor condition and partially collapsed at the time of the survey. Tostock Place itself is not a listed building.
