Description

Ticehurst Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1599. It has two storeys and attics, featuring a three-cell lobby-entrance plan, with the parlour cell on the left forming a short crosswing. The building is primarily timber-framed, though much of it is encased in mid-19th century red brick, which is now painted, and it has a parapet along the front. The crosswing is mainly plastered and has an end-jettied design at the first floor level on both the front and back, with the gable tie-beams of the crosswing and the right-hand end oversailing. The roofs are covered with plain tiles.

An axial chimney, also from 1599, is made of orange/buff brick and has three octagonal flues. The windows are mid-19th century small-pane sashes with flat arched heads. There is a 19th-century entrance porch with a flat roof and a parapet, featuring a six-panelled door, where the lower four panels are fielded and the upper pair are glazed.

The gable of the crosswing displays intricate carvings associated with the date 1599, located at the centre of the tiebeam. The jetty has a curved fascia adorned with vinescroll and a pair of dragons at the centre. Beneath the jetty are two carved console brackets, which are now mostly encased in brick. The tiebeam also features vinescroll carvings, and beneath it are long shallow arched brackets with diagonally-set carved drop finials at the eaves. The bargeboards are similarly carved with vinescroll, and the drop finial at the apex was renewed in the 19th century.
