Description

Folly Lodge, also known as Dove House, is a lodge built around 1765-1770 to accommodate the carpenter for the Redgrave Park Estate. It was designed as part of the park's landscaping to serve as an eyecatcher from the now-demolished Redgrave Hall, likely by Capability Brown for R. Holt. The lodge is constructed of grey brick with white brick and timber dressings, featuring a leaded domical roof. It is octagonal and exhibits a simple classical style over two storeys.

The entrance front, facing the former Hall, has a step leading up to a recessed part-glazed door framed by a timber Tuscan doorcase with three-quarter columns and a pediment. The flanking sides display blank gauged brick round-arched panels. To the left, there is a second entrance with a boarded door, above which is a reused richly moulded terracotta panel adorned with consoles and foliate ornament set within a relieving arch. Further left, towards the rear, is another door in a deep recess, above which is a three-light leaded staircase window set in a relieving arch. The right return features glazing bar casements with gauged brick flat-arched heads, and towards the rear, there is a blank arch. The rear has a full-height blank arch and an internal stack.

The lodge has a plinth, timber boarding beneath a heavy cornice, and a blocking course. The ribbed domical roof is topped with an acorn finial. Inside, the ground floor room retains an original timber fire surround with a cornice, oval medallions, and architraved doors leading to the pantry and stairs, along with a stop-chamfered binding beam. The first floor has not been inspected.
