Description

Moat House is a former farmhouse dating from around 1400, with alterations made in the mid 16th century and early 17th century. The building has two storeys and is constructed of timber framing with plaster. It features thatched roofs, with a cross-wing on the left and a lean-to on the right. An early 17th-century axial chimney made of red brick has a central pilaster shaft. The windows are mid 20th-century small-pane casements, and there is a boarded entrance door on the side.

Inside, the central two-bay open hall showcases impressive features from the early 15th century, including heavy close-studding and minimal tension bracing. There is a blocked doorway with a two-centred head that led to the parlour, which was apparently demolished and rebuilt as a lean-to in the 18th or 19th century. The hall contains a fine open crownpost truss; the slightly cambered tie-beam is moulded with a double roll and hollow chamfer, and it has a pair of arch-braces with two-centred curvature (one is mainly concealed and the second is missing). The large octagonal crownpost has a moulded capital and base, supported by thick four-way braces.

Around 1550, an upper floor was added to the hall, featuring well-moulded beams and joists with a sunk hollow chamfer. A wide lintelled fireplace was installed in the cross-entry. The cross-wing may be original but was remodelled in the 17th century to create a parlour with a brick arched fireplace, and it underwent further changes in the mid 20th century. There is also a partial medieval moat associated with the property.
