Description

Falcon's Hall is a farmhouse located on Finningham Road in Rickinghall Superior. It dates back to the early 17th century, with possible origins in the 16th century, and has undergone alterations and extensions in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features a timber frame that is plastered, with steeply pitched roofs covered in machine tiles and pantiles, and some slate at the rear.

The layout is a broad three-cell cross entry plan, with a two-bay jettied cross wing at the parlour end, which may be part of an earlier structure. The farmhouse is two storeys high with an attic. The entrance is positioned to the left of the center and features an early 19th-century recessed architraved part-glazed six-panel door with shaped brackets supporting a pedimental hood. To the left of the entrance is a six-pane glazing bar casement, and to the right are dual two-light casements, both with hoodboards. On the first floor, there are three-light and dual two-light casements. The parlour cross wing has a ground floor three-light casement with a jetty supported on two curved brackets, and a first-floor three-light casement, along with exposed plates and purlins.

The building has an offset plinth and boxed eaves, with a four-light dormer above the hall. There is an axial stack on the main ridge between the hall and parlour, featuring three conjoined hexagonal shafts, with the shaft for the parlour being an addition. The right return has two first-floor three-light casements, while the left gable end has two and three-light casements, exposed plates, and double purlins, along with a service door towards the rear. The rear includes two lights in the cross wing gable, and behind the hall is a 19th-century lean-to with a catslide roof, along with a 20th-century lean-to that has a half-glazed door. There is an internal kitchen stack at the rear of the service bay, and behind it is a 19th-century timber frame or clay lump backhouse with a slate roof, mixed casements, a loft hatch, and a left end stack.

Inside, much of the frame is concealed, but the hall features an ovolo moulded binding beam, while the parlour end has an exposed stop-chamfered post of large scantling and cambered tie beams. There is also an 18th-century cellar. A plan from 1599 indicates that the original structure was a five-bay triple gable fronted house, which bears no resemblance to the current building. Falcon's Hall was formerly known as Facon's Hall and is situated on a partly moated site.
