Description

Kiln Farm Cottage is a house that was originally built around 1600 and later extended in the mid to late 17th century, with further casing and extensions added in the 20th century. It features a timber frame that is plastered, with 20th-century brick casing and additional structures at the rear. The cottage has a steeply pitched roof made of corrugated sheet material.

Originally designed as two cells with an end stack, the building was modified to include a parlour, resulting in a three-cell cross entry plan. It has one storey and an attic. The entrance includes a boarded door located to the left of the center, with a second boarded door on the far right leading into the parlour. There are also 20th-century three-light and cross casement windows, along with a three-light glazing bar dormer in the hall chamber.

The cottage has an axial ridge stack positioned to the right of center between the hall and parlour, with its cap rebuilt. An external stack has been added to the left or service end, and there are three-light casements in the attic on this side. The right end features two-light casements and an external stack at the rear, along with a lean-to outshut from the service bay.

Inside, the cottage displays close studding, with the hall featuring applied moulded heads on the storey posts, a stop-chamfered cross axial binding beam, and stop-chamfered jambs on the service doorway. The service end includes reverse curved arched braces that are halved into the walling. The parlour has a stop-chamfered axial binding beam and straight through tension bracing in the walling, along with collars and clasp purlins in the roof structure.
