Description
Highways is a barn that was originally part of a former rectory, dating from the early 17th century and converted around 1960 into a dwelling. The structure features a timber frame that is entirely roughcast, topped with a steeply pitched pantiled roof. It consists of five bays and is a single storey. The front has 20th-century openings, all at ground floor level, and a 20th-century 'midstrey' has been added to the rear, along with inserted stacks.
Inside, the central bay was originally open with cart entrances, while the left bay was used for storage. The interior showcases close studding with reverse cranked arched braces in the walling, stop-chamfered wallplates, and arched braces connecting jowled posts to tie beams. The roof is constructed with double butt purlins and collars to the principals, although the wind braces have been removed. The barn retains a largely intact and good frame.
