Description
Hawks Mill is a former watermill built in 1884, with wings added in 1892. The main structure has five windows across its three storeys, with attics, and features slightly set-back wings that are one window wide on either side and two storeys high, also with attics. The building is constructed of red brick, accented with twin bands of gault brick at various levels. Pilasters between each bay of the central range rise from the first floor, have capitals at the third floor, and support round arches at the third storey, each containing a circular window. The roofs are mainly covered with concrete plain tiles, with the higher block featuring gabletted hips and the lower blocks having half-hipped roofs; one block has an asbestos-slated roof. The windows are small-pane iron with segmental heads made of gauged gault brick. There are boarded doors, some with oblong fanlights. A weatherboarded hoist with small-pane casements is cantilevered centrally above the third storey, while a smaller hoist projects from the left-hand gable. The left-hand block houses an Armfield water turbine that is still operational, and in front of it is a late 18th-century bridge beneath the road. This bridge has two semicircular arches, primarily made of red brick with random burned headers, and the parapets have been rebuilt in 19th-century gault brick. The milling machinery has been removed.
