Description
The building known as the Bakehouse, located 15 metres south of Badley Hall, is an outbuilding that was originally built as a bakehouse for Badley Hall in the early or mid 16th century. It has a two-cell plan and stands two storeys high with attics. The structure is timber-framed and pebble-dashed, with parts underbuilt in 19th-century red brick. It features a plaintiled roof and a large gable chimney made of red brick, which is possibly original, although the upper section has been rebuilt. The brickwork shows tumbled-in offsets. The building has slatted unglazed windows, with some original openings retained but lacking their diamond mullions. Inside, the main room consists of two bays and includes a large lintelled fireplace and a cross-entry. The single-bay end room also has accommodation above, but the attic floor was inserted in the 17th or 18th century. The roof is a clasped-purlin type with reduced principals, and the heavy timber framing is exposed throughout. The Bakehouse is also referred to as 'The Cottage'.
