Description
Grange Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with remodelling that occurred in the mid-19th century. The building features a three-cell lobby entrance plan, with the service cell on the left being the remaining part of a lower house from around 1570. It is two storeys high, constructed of timber framing and roughcast, while the right gable has been rebuilt in brick. The roof is pantiled, displaying a chequer pattern of glazed and unglazed tiles, and was formerly thatched.
There is an axial 17th-century chimney, with the lower half plastered and the upper half rebuilt in 19th-century red brick. The mid-19th-century casements are present, and both the hall and parlour feature flat-roofed splayed bays. The lobby entrance has a mid-19th-century doorway with a simple entablature and pilasters, leading to a 20th-century six-panelled door. Inside, the 16th-century service cell has chamfered ceiling joists laid flat, while the 17th-century framing is slighter and includes a blocked mullioned window in the rear wall. There are back-to-back fireplaces in the hall and parlour, with the latter having a segmental arched head. The building also features very pronounced jowls on the storey posts, which can be compared to The White House on Church Lane.
