Description
Poplar Farmhouse is a house that was originally a farmhouse, built in two stages during the early and late 16th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The building has two storeys and a three-cell plan. It features a timber-framed structure that is plastered, with mid-20th century herringbone pargetting in panels. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has a central chimney made of red brick that dates from the 17th century.
Most of the windows are from the 20th century and consist of three lights with metal casements and leaded lights. However, several 16th-century diamond-mullioned windows have been restored and glazed in the 20th century. The entrance door at the rear is a boarded door from the 20th century.
At the right-hand end of the house, there is an early or mid-16th century three-bay hall that features a binding joist with broach-stopped chamfers and large unchamfered joists, along with tension-braced close-studwork. A two-cell extension, which includes a service room and a new hall, was added to the left in the 16th century, converting the old hall into a parlour. A chimney was inserted into the old cross-passage in the late 16th century or 17th century. The later construction has less massive but more closely spaced studwork. Half of the wind-braced butt-purlin roof remains intact. Additionally, there are three minor extensions from the 19th and 20th centuries located at the left and rear of the building.
