Description
Garnhams Cottages, consisting of Nos 1 and 2, is a former farmhouse that has been divided into two dwellings. It dates from the late 16th century, with a 17th-century wing to the east, creating an L-shaped plan. The building is timber framed and plastered, topped with a roof made of glazed black pantiles. The main range is two stories tall, while the east wing is one and a half stories. The windows are a mix of 19th and 20th-century casements, and the north gable end of the main range features a 20th-century gabled porch with a boarded door. The east wing has its own gabled porch with a 20th-century door, a flat-roofed dormer, and a two-story rear addition from the 19th century. Each section has an internal stack. The main range consists of four bays, but the original layout is unclear. Two bays show exposed joists, all set flat, with one high-set tie beam supported by secondary upper crucks, of which only one is visible. There is some plain studding on the upper floor, and at the south end, a steeply cambered tie beam and a queen-post roof can be found. The stack is a later addition, and the later wing has been significantly modernized internally.
