Description

Town Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, built in at least two phases to create a long, four-cell range. The structure is timber framed, with roughcast render on the front and rear, while the gable ends are partly covered in tarred brick and partly plastered. It has a pantiled roof and stands two storeys high. The building features various casement windows from the 19th and 20th centuries. There is a 16th-century four-centre arched doorway leading into a cross-passage, which has a mid-20th-century boarded door, along with two additional doors. An internal stack has a rendered shaft, and some exposed studding can be seen in the hall, along with evidence of a window that had large chamfered mullions. The upper bay has plain joists that are exposed, and there is a good open fireplace. The one-bay parlour features closely spaced plain joists, and the chamfered bridging beam is positioned very close to the chimney breast, suggesting it was added later than the wall posts. The service end has been modernised, now featuring a mid-20th-century stair. Only the main components of the frame are visible on the upper floor. The cell at the left end is a later addition, currently used as an outhouse, with widely spaced studs and half of the first-floor joists replaced. The roof has not been examined.
