Description

This barn, located approximately 100 metres northwest of Abbey Farmhouse, is a Grade II listed building. Originally an ecclesiastical structure of unknown function linked to the Priory of St Peter, which was dissolved in 1537, it dates back to around 1500. The building was used as a house from the mid-16th century and converted to a barn in the 18th century. It suffered fire damage around 1920.

The barn is constructed of red brick with re-used ashlar and features a pantiled roof. It has two storeys and a five-window range. The west face displays English bond brickwork, with a blocked doorway to the right of centre that has chamfered jambs and a four-centred head. There are four evenly spaced two-light chamfered brick windows on the ground floor, along with one later square-headed opening to the left of centre. The first floor contains four single-light chamfered brick lancets and one two-light window. The roof is gabled.

The east flank is made of early 18th-century brick laid in English bond, featuring four ground-floor openings and three on the first floor, including the remains of one first-floor arched window. The north gable includes re-used ashlar, while the south gable previously had one two-light stone window on each floor, which was removed in the late 20th century, although the upper window jambs remain.

Inside, the barn was re-roofed in the 1920s, and there is evidence of an upper hall at the south end. It is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, with the county number 199.
