Description
Castle Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in two stages, with the main range dating from the mid 17th century and a late 16th century cross-wing to the right. It underwent remodelling around 1840. The building has two storeys and attics, featuring a three-cell lobby entrance plan. The main range was added to an earlier parlour wing. The structure is timber-framed, with the main range plastered. The left gable and the cross-wing are encased in 19th century gault brick, and there is a 19th century chimney on the right. The windows are 3-light casements from around 1840 with small panes, while the cross-wing has small-pane sashes. The lobby entrance has a 20th century framed and boarded door. The main range retains complete unmoulded 17th century framing, including primary braced studding, on-edge floor joists, an ovolo-moulded bridging beam in the service cell to the left, and a clasped purlin roof. There is an open lintelled fireplace in the hall. The cross-wing features superior framing with good unchamfered first floor joists laid flat and double ovolo-moulding on the main beams, along with close-studding.
