Description
The Art Gallery, opened in 1880 as the Ipswich Arts Club, was likely designed by Horace Cheston, the architect of the adjacent museum building. The building is constructed of red brick and terra cotta. The east façade is two storeys high and comprises three bays, with the central bay projecting and topped by a pediment. It features an elliptical-headed doorway and a large sash window on the first floor. Ground-floor windows on either side are set within segmental recesses with keyblocks, and above are two-light windows. A moulded brick cornice and parapet, incorporating finials over corner pilasters, complete the façade. The right-hand return elevation has five bays divided by giant pilasters and also features segmental-headed recesses. Roof lights along the ridge are terminated in segmental gables.
