Description
The FitzGerald Mausoleum, located in the churchyard of St Michael, is a mid-19th century mausoleum constructed from knapped flint with ashlar dressings. It is a single-storey, half-sunk structure. The east face features five steps leading down into an area flanked by walls of knapped flint and topped with ashlar coping. Central to this face are double doors surrounded by an ashlar frame, supported by pillars with moulded bases and foliate capitals. Above the doors is an archway with a hollow chamfer that includes square-flower ornaments. There is a weathered inscription on the voussoirs above, which reads: "Lord (illegible) Receive my Spirit."
Above this, a gablet contains a blank shield, and a pyramidal roof made of ashlar blocks simulates tiles. The south face has a similar central gable that includes a cross-shaped light. The north and west fronts are similar, but the north face was damaged during a re-survey in 1987, revealing the brick walling beneath due to the loss of the knapped flint facing. Surrounding the mausoleum is a set of cast iron railings and gates, featuring circular posts with fleur-de-lys finials at the corners.
