Description
Retreat House is a former farmhouse that has been used recently as a Christian study centre. It dates from the 17th century and is located in the south aisle of the abbey, with its south wall incorporating part of the abbey's walling. The building is timber framed and plastered, topped with a plaintile roof. It has two storeys and an attic. The north elevation features a range of three windows with casements, some of which retain their original leaded lights, and a plain boarded door. There is a single dormer window on the left side. An early 19th-century wing extends across the west end of the abbey nave, built of brick with a slate roof, and it has three windows with sashes and glazing bars in flush frames, along with flat arches. The central doorway has an inset six-panel door, panelled reveals, and an arch soffit, topped by a semi-circular fanlight with radiating glazing bars. To the left, there is a mid-19th-century extension under the same hipped roof, and to the right, a four-storey 20th-century extension.
