Description

Originally a house, part of which was later used as a school, the building now comprises two private dwellings. Dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, it incorporates additions from the mid and late 19th century in a Tudor style. The main range stands at a right angle to the road. It is timber-framed with a thatched roof covering all but the rear. A mid-19th century red brick extension, now colourwashed, projects forward. This extension has a large window with two tiers of seven trefoil-headed lights, a hood mould above, and a smaller two-light window in a matching style, all topped with ornamental bargeboards. To the left of the main range is a lean-to extension with a mid-20th century entrance door. Set further back is a late 19th century addition with exposed timbering, windows with trefoil-headed lights, and ornamental bargeboards. A one-and-a-half-storey timber-framed wing with a pantiled roof, along with the rear portion of the main range, forms Town Pightle Cottage. This section features various casement windows and a gabled dormer to the front. Two boarded doors are situated at the rear. Town Pightle Cottage has undergone fewer alterations and retains good exposed timbering inside.
