Description
The clock tower, built in 1859 for George Tomline, MP, is located 40 metres south of Orwell Park School. Designed in the Baroque style, it is constructed of red brick with limestone dressings. The base features banded rusticated brickwork, with open archways on each face topped by semicircular heads made of gauged brick. Each corner has a pair of clasping buttresses, each topped with a stone pier and ball finial. Above this, shallow clasping buttresses extend to the full height of the tower. A stone string course at mid-height runs over a central panel displaying the monogram G.T. on two faces and the date 1859 on a third. Below the clock, which is framed in stone, are semicircular-headed belfry openings, with single openings on three sides and paired openings on the south side. The parapets feature a heavy stone cornice and open balustrading, with pyramid finials on the corner piers. A slender, full-height stair turret with a circular plan is located at the north-east corner, appearing almost detached from the main structure.
