Description
The Long Shop is a building constructed in 1853 as a workshop for the manufacture of portable steam engines. It is currently being restored as a museum. The structure is made of red brick with yellow brick dressings and features a pantile roof with three louvred ventilators at the ridge. At the east end, there is a timber bell-turret. The building is two stories tall, nine bays long (with the center bay wider than the others) and three bays wide. The east end has a tripartite design with a central square-headed entrance and arched windows; the window above the entrance is longer than the four in the outer bays and includes a clock face in the gable above. The west end is similar but has been altered and does not have a clock. All side windows are segmental-headed, with iron glazing bars and set back within the wall surface, giving it a pilastered appearance. Inside, there are fitters' galleries at the first-floor level, leaving an open central well.
