Description

The Church of St. Mary is a Grade II listed church with a medieval core, largely rebuilt in 1878 by William Smith of London. It consists of a nave, chancel, south aisle, and organ chamber, with a vestry and south porch added in the 20th century. The church is constructed of flint rubble with limestone dressings and features plaintiled roofs. At the west end, there is an open timber-framed bell-turret topped with a shingled broach spire. Much of the north nave wall showcases coursed flintwork typical of the 12th century. A few 14th-century features remain, although heavily restored, including the south doorway, west aisle window, north chancel doorway, and an adjacent niche. The north doorway and a nearby reset niche date from the 15th century, as does the restored east window. The north nave and chancel doors have moulded planks from the 15th or 16th century, while the south porch door is similar and was reset from the south nave doorway. Most other features, including windows and the nave arcade, were added in 1878 and are designed in the 14th-century style. A notable feature is the fine 15th-century limestone font, which has sunk panels on the bowl carved with emblems of the evangelists, and sculptured figures of lions on the stem. The church is listed as Grade II due to its early nave walling and the exceptionally fine font.
