Description

Theberton Hall is a house built in 1792 for George Doughty, with extensive alterations and additions made in 1852 in the Italian Renaissance style. Most of these additions were demolished in the 1920s. The building features yellow brick, stone, and stucco ornamentation and is two storeys high with a five-window range arranged in a 2:1:2 pattern, with the central bay slightly projecting. The windows are sashes with glazing bars and have stucco architraves. The central doorway is framed by a porch with square pillars and Ionic columns, leading to a six-panel door with a shouldered architrave. There is a string course at the first floor level, and the central window has a segmental pediment supported by console brackets. A projecting stone cornice with heavy brackets sits above, and a parapet with the motto "PALMA NON SINE PVLVERE" is located over the central bay, accompanied by an embellished coat of arms. The roof is not visible. To the left side of the house is a single-storey wing, which is part of the 19th-century extensions. The right-hand return front features a curved three-window bay with a pierced stone balcony supported by paired Tuscan columns. The hall was the home of Charles Montagu Doughty (1843-1926), who authored 'Travels in Arabia Deserta'.
