Description

The Round House, located at Nos 1 and 1A on St John's Street, is a building likely constructed around 1843. It is a three-storey structure made of yellow brick. At the rounded corner with St John's Hill, there is a circular section that is slightly more than half a circle, featuring two sash windows with glazing bars and blank panels in the center on the upper floors, all set beneath gauged flat arches. The roof is slate, and the eaves have a soffit. The ground floor is finished in stucco and includes coupled pilasters, a central entrance with double doors, and four-light casements on either side, topped by a continuous entablature. The northern wing is also three storeys high and has three sash windows, with an additional small window on the first floor above the entrance, all featuring gauged flat arches. The entrance includes a three-panel door with a divided rectangular fanlight. The building occupies a prominent position at the junction with New Street and also includes No 1A, which has its entrance at the rear.
