Description

CRETINGHAM TM 26 SW TM 223 606 1/35 The Rookery - - II

Small country house. 1835-1837 for Mr Barthrope. White Flemish bond brick with a hipped slate roof. Two storeys. Drive front: 5 bays symmetrically disposed, the central 3 projecting slightly with a pedimental gable above. Central ½-glazed door with rectangular overlight. Sash windows to either side of this of 3 x 3 panes with moulded lintels. Three similar windows to the first floor. Band of 4 bricks depth dividing the lower body from the pedimental gable above. The bays at either side have sashes of 4 x 3 panes to both floors, all these sash windows having moulded lintels and ashlar sills. The right hand side has clasping buttresses, a central pedimentaly gabled bay with French windows to the ground floor and at either side of this sash windows falling to near floor level of 3 x 3 panes and three first floor windows of 3 x 2 panes, all having moulded lintels. The garden front (rear) has clasping buttresses at the angles and pilaster buttresses to either side of the central bow window which has 2 bays with windows of 3 x 3 panes with low sills and a similar window at left with a glazed doorway at right. To the first floor are two central windows of 3 x 2 having moulded lintels. Interior: Not inspected. The owner reports the remnants of a timber-framed building incorporated in the rear rooms of the present building.
