Description

The Church of St. Martin is a parish church dating from the 14th century. The west tower was built in the early 15th century, and the north chapel was constructed by Roger Cavendish around 1414. The chancel was rebuilt in the 17th century, and a major restoration occurred between 1849 and 1850. A vestry was added in 1955 by Munrose Cautley.

The tower is primarily made of red brick, which is mostly rendered except for the north face, and features a battlemented parapet and stepped diagonal buttresses. The nave is constructed from random flint and septaria, while the chancel and north chapel are mainly in red brick and rendered. The roofs are covered with plain tiles. The south wall of the nave has two 19th-century windows in the Decorated style, with a 14th-century south doorway between them. This doorway has a moulded arch with carved heads at the springings and similar carvings at the ogee head. The north chapel features two five-light perpendicular windows.

Inside, there is a font with a square bowl resting on five pillars, styled in the 12th century. The altar is a Stuart Holy Table with a carved front and legs. On the north side of the chancel, there is a piscina niche that incorporates some medieval stonework. Both the nave and chancel were re-roofed in the mid-19th century, with the chancel roof supported on stone corbels depicting angels and foliage in a medieval style.
