Description
The Rookery is a house dating from the 16th century, with the south wing largely rebuilt in the 19th century. It has an L-shaped plan. The south wing features a red brick exterior with a colourwashed facade, plain tiles on the front, and pantiles on the rear. It is two storeys high and has casement windows, including one with leaded panes, and cambered brick arches. The doorway is located at the angle of the two ranges and consists of a four-panel door, with the upper two panels glazed and featuring ornamental wrought iron infilling, pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. There is an internal stack with a sawtooth pattern that is set forward of the roof ridge.
The north wing is timber framed and plastered, with the plaster designed to imitate ashlar. It has a plain tiled roof and is also two storeys high. The windows are mainly 18th-century square leaded mullion and transom casements. The gable end features an 18th-century two-storey three-light canted bay with a modillion cornice. Inside, there is a fine internal stack with a cluster of six circular flues that have moulded brick enrichment, moulded bases, and renewed star caps. The north wing includes a fully panelled ground floor room with a remarkable 18th-century moulded plaster ceiling, believed to be of French or Italian craftsmanship.
