Description

Nos 32 and 38 Market Hill are a building complex dating back to the 16th century, with 18th-century shop fronts added later. The front of the building features a triple-gabled design, with modern mock half-timber and plastered cladding above an overhanging first floor. The roof is tiled, and there are three 18th-century rainwater heads.

The rear of No 32 faces Glover's Yard and retains much of its original character, including exposed timber framing, an overhanging first floor, early windows, and an exposed beamed room on the first floor. The front of the building showcases three 18th-century bow shop fronts, featuring original glazing bars and three pairs of carved brackets that support a projecting cornice beneath the first-floor level.

No 32 has a pair of glazed doors with glazing bars to the upper panels, as well as a single two-panel door with an oblong fanlight. No 38 features a three-panel door with a glazed upper panel. A passageway leads to Glover’s Yard. The first floor incorporates a three-light window beneath the gable, with sash windows on the sides and a mullion-transom casement in the centre.

The listed buildings in Market Hill form a group centred around The Shire Hall.
