Description

This is a two-storey building at 40 and 42 Market Hill, originally dating back to the 17th century, and re-fronted in 1852. It was initially a single building, and retains timber framing. The first floor of the original structure slightly overhangs. Number 40 features three three-light casement windows at the first floor, with simplified glazing. The ground floor has a shop front on the right and a brick portion on the left with a recessed sash window lacking glazing bars. A six-panel door is set within a plain frame with a flush head. Number 42 has a single window, with a canted splay bay at the first floor, now without glazing bars, and a wood shop front on the ground floor, featuring a two-light window with glazing bars. The listed buildings on Market Hill form a group around The Shire Hall.
