Description
The presbytery to the Roman Catholic Church of St Edmund is a building constructed in 1894 by Bernard Smith for the English Benedictine Congregation, with Frederic Smith as the patron. It is designed in the Tudor Revival style, featuring red brick with stone dressings and a plain tile roof adorned with ornamental brick stacks that have shafts and cornices. The building has crow-stepped gables and consists of two storeys and an attic, with a gable that projects on the right side.
The first floor has a four-window range of paired and four-light sash windows set in stone mullioned surrounds. The ground floor features two- and three-light mullioned and transom windows with leaded lights. The entrance is located under a stone arch on the right side of the projecting gable. The side of the building also has similar paired and triple sash windows and another projecting gable.
The interior has only been partly inspected, but it includes a corridor that runs across the entire ground floor from the entrance to the sacristy of the church, to which the presbytery is connected. Together with the church, the Church of St Mary (which includes the remains of the Benedictine Convent), and the walls in both churchyards, the presbytery forms a very significant group in the centre of Bungay.
