Description

Hor's Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 15th century, with later extensions. It is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a thatched roof and featuring an internal chimney-stack with a plain red brick shaft. The building has 1½ storeys and consists of 7 bays. It has various windows, including 2 with diamond mullions, some plain 3-light casements, and one in a 3-light mullion-and-transom style, all of which are old. The entrance is through a plank door.

The farmhouse has a basic 3-cell medieval plan, which includes a small 2-bay open hall, with extensions at both ends of the house. The partition at the lower end of the hall remains, showing evidence of 3 original doorways, one of which is now blocked. The ceiling joists in the former service area have been renewed. On the first floor, the upper part of the lower end partition has been shifted to create 2 equal-sized upper rooms. The inserted hall ceiling features plain unchamfered joists and a chamfered main beam. The original cross-entry doors are blocked, and part of the long 5-light hall window remains on the rear wall, with diamond mullions still in place.

The chimney-stack, which has 2 back-to-back hearths on the ground floor, was inserted into the parlour at the upper end of the hall, which was later enlarged by adding a further bay. This end was subsequently extended again with yet another bay. Both of these extensions include windows with diamond mullions, and there is another similar window above the stair, next to the chimney-stack. The roof features some form of side purlins, although the purlins themselves are above ceiling level. Part of the windbraces is visible, and the rafters are smoke-blackened throughout the original roof.
