Description
The stables and carriage house, located approximately 30 metres west of Stutton House, were likely built around 1822 for Reverend Thomas Mills when he made alterations to Stutton House. The structure is made of red brick and features a red plain tiled gambrel roof. It has Dutch gables on both the east and west sides, with the west gable featuring a chimneystack at the apex and a weathervane with tracery and the letter "M" on the east gable.
The building is two storeys high with attics. The south face has three flat-headed dormers and jetties out to the first floor, supported by five carved brackets. It includes four pivot windows and a central stable door. The east gable has a vertically boarded loft door with a hipped porch above it, and an ornate cast iron spiral staircase. On the ground floor, there is a three-light window with a transom. The north face features a single-storey timber-framed extension with vertically boarded walls, carved brackets supporting the front tie-beam, and recessed folding carriage doors. This building is included for its group value with Stutton House.
